BGB steps up vigilance along Cumilla border to stop push-ins

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified security measures along the Cumilla border to prevent continued push-in attempts from India. The force remains on high alert across the border areas. In response to reports of Rohingyas and other foreign nationals being pushed into the country through various border points, the 10 BGB Battalion in Cumilla has taken precautionary steps.

During an on-site visit to Bibir Bazar and Gazipur border areas on Saturday (May 17), it was observed that additional BGB personnel had been deployed compared to previous weeks.

According to BGB sources, the 10 BGB Battalion oversees approximately 96.10 kilometers of the Cumilla border, which adjoins India’s Tripura state. So far, no infiltration has been reported in the area. However, BGB is maintaining maximum alertness to address any unforeseen situation. Surveillance is also ongoing along the Gomti River in the Golabari border area.

Earlier this month, push-in incidents were reported from several border districts, including Khagrachhari, Kurigram, and Moulvibazar. Thanks to the strict vigilance of the 10 BGB Battalion, no such incidents have occurred in Cumilla, the BGB stated. Awareness programs and public outreach campaigns are being conducted regularly in the border areas. With support from Ansar-VDP and local residents, round-the-clock surveillance is underway, and any suspicious activity is being promptly intercepted.

Tanvir Ahmed Rahul, Acting Chairman of Panchthubi Union under Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila, said, “Alongside law enforcement, we locals are also staying alert to prevent India’s push-in attempts. We will not allow any Rohingya or Indian citizen to enter Bangladesh under any circumstances.”

Md Russell, Officer-in-Charge of the Bibir Bazar Land Port Border Police Outpost, said, “So far, no illegal Indian citizen or Rohingya has entered this area. Members of the BGB, Ansar, police, and intelligence agencies are maintaining continuous surveillance.”

A resident of the Shahapur border area, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Tensions have been high in our area since January due to India’s construction of a barbed-wire fence along the border. Many of Bangladesh’s farmlands lie right next to the fence. Although the issue was eventually resolved, a fresh sense of concern has emerged among locals. Still, we are hopeful that with BGB’s current level of vigilance, no major issue will arise.”

Commenting on the situation, Lt Col Mir Ali Ejaz, Commanding Officer of Cumilla 10 BGB, told News, “No push-in attempt has been made along the Cumilla border so far. However, we are on alert and have taken various preparations to counter any such attempts. BGB patrols have been doubled. In addition to our forces, Ansar members have also been deployed in various locations.”

He added, “BGB personnel have held multiple meetings with local residents in each border area. Awareness campaigns have been conducted. Intelligence is being gathered with the help of locals. Announcements have been made through mosques to inform people and seek their cooperation. We have multiple preparations in place to prevent any push-in attempts, and we are also ensuring that no tension escalates in the border areas.”
