Two dead in mob beating over cattle theft in Sirajganj

Two men died in a mob beating over alleged cattle theft in Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

The incident occurred at Pachthakuri of Chonagacha union under the upazila.

The identities of the dead are yet to be confirmed. Police have detained two individuals in connection with the incident.

Locals said a group of 5-6 people from Char area of Kazipur upazila were fleeing by boat after allegedly stealing cattle. Suspicious of the activity, villagers intercepted the boat and found several cows tied up inside. They then began beating two of the suspects. One died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The remaining members of the group reportedly managed to escape.

On Monday morning (August 4), Sirajganj Sadar River Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter. He said that the suspected thieves were crossing the Jamuna River by boat when locals, using another boat, stopped them. Upon discovering the bound cattle, the angry mob assaulted the suspects, resulting in the fatalities.

The bodies have been kept at Sirajganj Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital.

Sirajganj Sadar Police Station OC Mokhlesur Rahman said the police are working to uncover the full details of the incident.
