Riyadh signals greater investment and business interest as Dhaka seeks to take bilateral ties to a new level

Desk Report: Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia are moving to strengthen their long-standing relationship, with a greater focus on trade, investment, business and economic cooperation.

The renewed commitment came during a meeting between Bangladesh`s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Jeddah on the sidelines of the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.
During the meeting, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the recent positive momentum in bilateral relations and agreed on the need to further expand cooperation.
A major signal from Riyadh was that Bangladesh is now considered one of Saudi Arabia`s priority countries. Prince Faisal stressed the importance of strengthening economic ties and said Saudi companies were showing growing interest in Bangladesh.
The Saudi minister also expressed his country`s interest in increasing investment and expanding business activities in Bangladesh.
Saudi investment: A new opportunity for Bangladesh
The Saudi interest could create fresh opportunities for Bangladesh at a time when the country is seeking greater foreign investment, new markets and stronger economic partnerships.
Increased Saudi investment could potentially benefit several areas of the Bangladeshi economy, including infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, logistics, technology and other business sectors.
For ordinary Bangladeshis, stronger economic relations could mean more business opportunities, employment and access to new markets if planned investments are successfully implemented.
However, turning interest into actual investment will require continued discussions, attractive investment policies, efficient services and a stable business environment.
During the meeting, Prince Faisal praised the contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates to Saudi Arabia`s development.
Millions of Bangladeshis have built their livelihoods in Saudi Arabia, making the country one of the most important destinations for Bangladeshi migrant workers.
Their work is also important to Bangladesh`s economy because they send money home to their families. These remittances help support household incomes and contribute to the country`s foreign-exchange earnings.
The recognition by the Saudi foreign minister therefore carries significance beyond diplomacy. It highlights the important human and economic link between the two countries.
The meeting also carried a diplomatic message from Dhaka.
State Minister Humaiun Kobir handed over a letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
Kobir said several high-level visits between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia since the formation of the BNP-led government had created new opportunities for broader cooperation.
He also referred to possible high-level visits between the two countries in the near future.
The state minister invited Prince Faisal to visit Bangladesh at his convenience, signalling Dhaka`s desire to maintain high-level political engagement with Riyadh.
The latest development suggests that Bangladesh-Saudi relations are gradually moving beyond their traditional areas of cooperation.
For decades, manpower and religious ties have been central to the relationship. The new emphasis on investment and business indicates a possible shift towards a broader economic partnership.
If the two countries can translate the latest diplomatic commitments into concrete projects, Bangladesh could gain access to additional Saudi capital and business networks, while Saudi companies could find new opportunities in Bangladesh`s large and growing market.
The next important step will be to identify specific projects, conclude investment agreements and ensure that proposed cooperation produces tangible benefits for both countries.
The meeting was attended by Saudi Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Waleed Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, Bangladesh`s Permanent Representative to the OIC and senior officials from both countries.
With Riyadh describing Bangladesh as a priority country and Dhaka seeking closer engagement, the two sides now have an opportunity to turn renewed political goodwill into a stronger and more practical economic partnership.
