Jamaat expresses grief over Nepal floods and glacial disaster

Diplomatic Correspondent: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar has expressed deep grief and sympathy over the massive loss of life and destruction caused by devastating floods and a glacial collapse in Nepal.

Parwar visited the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka at around 3:00pm on Tuesday and signed the embassy`s condolence book, conveying his heartfelt sympathies to the government and people of Nepal.

Following the signing, Parwar held a courtesy meeting with Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari. During the meeting, the ambassador briefed the Jamaat leader on the recent disaster and the extent of the casualties and destruction.

Ambassador Bhandari also expressed gratitude for the regular assistance and solidarity extended by Jamaat-e-Islami since the beginning of the disaster.

On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Bangladesh`s Parliament, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Parwar also conveyed profound condolences over the deaths and devastation caused by the recent natural disaster in Nepal.

Speaking on the occasion, Parwar said Bangladesh and Jamaat-e-Islami stand beside the people of Nepal during their difficult and sorrowful time.

He expressed solidarity with the Nepalese government, rescue teams and disaster-affected people, and wished success for all humanitarian efforts aimed at dealing with the catastrophe.

Parwar further highlighted the long-standing friendly and cordial relations between the peoples of Bangladesh and Nepal. He expressed hope that the humanitarian tradition of standing by each other during difficult times would become even stronger through the current crisis.

Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee to the Leader of the Opposition, was also present during the visit.

According to the press release, a section of a glacier collapsed along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, triggering severe flooding and torrents of mud and rocks in areas near the border.

The disaster caused extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure across large areas, including Nepal`s Rasuwa district.

The latest reports cited in the statement on September 1 put the death toll in Nepal at more than 1,000, while several thousand people were reportedly still missing. Rescue and search operations were continuing in the affected areas.

The disaster has prompted widespread concern as emergency teams continue efforts to locate missing people, assist survivors and assess the scale of the destruction.
