Diplomatic Correspondent: Bangladesh and China have taken a new step towards strengthening cooperation in technical and vocational education with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the China-Bangladesh Vocational Education, Training and Research Centre.
The MoU was signed on Friday at the China-Bangladesh Education Exchange Conference, organised by the Jiangxi Provincial Government and Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University in China. On behalf of Bangladesh, Secretary of the Technical and Madrasa Education Division Md Daud Mia signed the agreement, while Professor Zheng Pengwu of Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University signed it for China.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan and Prime Minister`s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin were present during the signing ceremony.
The agreement is expected to create a broader framework for cooperation between the two countries in vocational education, skills development, research and industry-oriented training.
Under the cooperation framework, Bangladesh and China will work together on technical training programmes, bilingual educational materials, education-industry linkages, research activities, industrial training, study visits to China and specialised skills development, among other areas.
Three new cooperation platforms launched: The conference also witnessed the inauguration of three major cooperation platforms aimed at deepening educational and skills-development ties between the two countries.
The China-Bangladesh Vocational Teacher Training Centre was inaugurated by Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan and Fan Honghui, Deputy Director of the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education.
The Bangladesh Vocational Education Research Centre was inaugurated by Prime Minister`s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin and Professor Pei Hongwei of Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University.
The third initiative, the Bangladesh "Chinese Language + Skills Development" Cooperation Centre, was inaugurated by Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Md Daud Mia and Professor Zheng Pengwu, Vice President of Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University.
Officials and organisers believe these initiatives will open new avenues for teacher training, practical education, industry exposure, curriculum development, research collaboration, teacher-student exchanges, Chinese language learning and job-oriented skills development.
The programmes are also expected to strengthen links between educational institutions and industries and help young Bangladeshis acquire skills that match the changing demands of the labour market.
Focus on jobs and employable skills: Addressing the conference, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan said Bangladesh`s young population is one of the country`s greatest strengths.
He stressed that quality technical education, practical training and modern skills could help transform the country`s young people into a globally competitive workforce.
The minister said technical and vocational education must remain closely connected with the real needs of industry and employment. He called for stronger Bangladesh-China cooperation in curriculum development, teacher training, institutional partnerships, modern technology, practical education and employment-oriented learning. He also said deeper cooperation with Chinese universities, vocational institutions and industries could help strengthen Bangladesh`s technical education system, develop skilled human resources for different industries and create new opportunities for young people.
The minister expressed hope that cooperation between Bangladesh and China in education and skills development would make a long-term contribution to human resource development and create greater opportunities for future generations.
"A new chapter" in technical education cooperation: Prime Minister`s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin described the signing of the MoU as the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh-China cooperation in technical education.
He said the establishment of the China-Bangladesh Vocational Education, Training and Research Centre would provide a platform for turning bilateral commitments into practical programmes that directly benefit young people.
"The cooperation should not remain limited to the signing of an MoU. Its main objective is to make it effective in practice and create employment and opportunities for young people," he said.
He emphasised a simple but important goal: turning education into skills, skills into employment, and employment into opportunities.
High-level participation: A high-level Bangladeshi delegation attended the conference, along with senior officials from the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education, representatives of universities and vocational institutions, and members of the industrial sector.
As many as 19 universities and vocational institutions from Jiangxi Province participated in the conference.
The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan. It included Prime Minister`s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin and Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Md Daud Mia.
The latest initiatives are being viewed as an important step in the long-term Bangladesh-China partnership in education and human-resource development. More importantly, they could help build a stronger bridge between classroom learning, practical skills, industrial requirements and employment.
For Bangladesh, where millions of young people enter the labour market every year, such cooperation could prove particularly significant if the proposed training, research and industry partnerships are translated into accessible, high-quality programmes and actual employment opportunities.
