Chattogram North District Awami League`s former vice-president and ex-chairman of Mirsharai Upazila Parishad, Alhaj Gias Uddin, was arrested upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early Friday (May 23) morning. He had just returned from the United States.

The arrest was carried out by immigration police as he disembarked from the plane. Gias Uddin`s wife, Tahmina Gias, confirmed that they had been living in the US for an extended period and were returning to Bangladesh when the arrest took place.

Mirsharai Police Station`s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman stated that Gias Uddin is facing five separate cases. A police team has been dispatched from Mirsharai to Dhaka to take him into custody and transport him back.
