A Juba Dal activist was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Raozan upazila of Chattogram on Sunday (July 6).
The incident took place around 12:00 pm in the Ishaan Bhottar Hat area of Kodalpur Union. The deceased, identified as Md Selim, 40, son of Amir Hossain, was a resident of Shamsher Para in Ward No. 7 under the union.
Selim was rushed to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex after the shooting, where doctors declared him dead. As news of the incident spread, his relatives gathered at the hospital, overwhelmed by grief.
Md Riduan, Selim’s cousin, said, “After attending our aunt`s funeral prayer, Selim went to Ishaan Bhottar Hat to buy medicine. He was accompanied by his wife Ferdous Akter and daughter. At that time, four to five assailants, including two young men wearing burqas, arrived in a CNG-run autorickshaw and opened fire. One bullet struck him in the head.”
Selim’s wife, Ferdous Akter, added, “Suddenly, a group of people in an autorickshaw shot my husband and fled. I fell off the motorcycle. I recognized one of the attackers—his name is Elias.”
Local sources suspect the attack may be linked to a dispute over establishing dominance in the area. Selim was reportedly involved in local politics as a member of Jubo Dal.
Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan said, “Selim was brought to the hospital with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead by doctors. After an inquest, the body will be sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.”
The killing has triggered tension in the area, prompting increased police presence. Law enforcement officials have assured that those involved will be arrested soon.
