A 70-year-old betel leaf trader was killed after being hit by a speeding CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Pirojpur’s Indurkani upazila on Thursday night.

The accident took place around 7:00 PM near the Godown area on the Indurkani–Chandipur Highway.

The deceased, Md. Islam Hawlader, was a resident of South Indurkani village in the upazila.

According to locals, a speedy CNG hit Islam while he was going to mosque for evening prayers, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

Locals rushed him to Indurkani Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred to Pirojpur District Hospital for better treatment.

The attending doctors of the hospital later shifted him to Khulna Medical College Hospital as his health condition deteriorated. Islam, however, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital around 10:00 PM.

Confirming the matter, Indurkani Police Station officer-in-charge Maruf Hossain said that a team of police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased`s family members.

They were looking into the matter, the OC added.
