kamrul Hasan : A traditional boat race of almost 250 years was held after a long 18 years in Helachia village of Nali Union in Ghior Upazila of Manikganj. Thousands of people from different parts of the district have gathered on both banks of the Dhaleshwari River since Saturday afternoon. Since it was organized after a long break, a festive atmosphere was created around this competition in the entire area.
Not only the boat race, but also more than a hundred temporary shops were set up at the fair. People of all ages gathered around the stalls of various products including food, toys, cosmetics, and others. Everyone from children and teenagers to the elderly rejoiced in joy and excitement.
A total of 10 boats from Manikganj and neighboring Tangail districts participated in this competition organized by the Helachia Bazar Merchants Association. The sound of boats racing in the river water filled the surroundings. Each participating team was given a 32-inch color LED television as a prize.
Gazi Habib Hasan Rintu, president of the boat race organizing committee, said, "We are very happy to organize the boat race again after many years. The people of the village have become festive around this competition. We will try to continue this organization in the future as well."
Local residents said that after 18 years, this organization has brought back memories of their childhood and ancestors. They have expressed their hope to organize the boat race regularly every year during the monsoon season to maintain the vitality of tradition and entertainment that has been created in the rural township.
