  Date : 26-07-2025

Police have recovered the floating body of a woman from a pond at Kabirhat upazila in Noakhali district on Thursday night.

The body was recovered from a pond in front of the Bhuiyan Bari at Parshuram village under Ward No. 9 of Norottamipur union in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Rokeya Parvin Surma, 60, wife of Nurul Matin of Surma Manjil in Laxminarayanpur village under Kadir Hanif union in the Sadar upazila.

According to locals, Parvin suffered from schizophrenia, a mental illness. On Wednesday night, she was heard screaming inside her house, which was a recurring behavior.

She left her house on Thursday morning. On that day, around 8:30 PM, passersby spotted her body floating in the pond of Khokon Bhuiyan`s house in the neighboring Parshuram village in the upazila. Later, they informed the police.

Being informed, police recovered the elderly woman`s body from the scene around midnight. Locals speculate that the woman might have fallen into the pond while walking through muddy water, leading to her death.

Kabirhat Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Shahin Mia said that the deceased`s son, Monirul Ahsan, informed them that his mother was mentally ill. Based on information from locals, her body was recovered from the pond.

No signs of injury were found on the body of the deceased. The body will be sent to the hospital for an autopsy and the cause of death will be known after the report, the OC added.
