  DU student Shammo Murder:

Online Report : Students of Dhaka University have staged a protest at Shahbagh Police Station demanding swift arrest of those involved in murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Institute of Education and Research.

On Friday, around 12 PM, under banner of ‘General Student Society of Bangladesh,’ they organized the protest.

They are also calling for a fair trial and a safe campus.

The protesters first gathered in front of Institute of Education and Research, Shammo`s department. From there, they marched to Raju Sculpture, where they held a brief rally. After the rally, they marched toward Shahbagh Police Station and staged a sit-in.

Ibrahim Munshi, a student of 27th batch of Institute of Education and Research, said, "This is an apolitical banner. Various political parties have started making excuses using Shammo`s death. Their main demand is the resignation of certain individuals, but our main demand is justice for Shammo’s murder. Even though 72 hours have passed since the killing, the person who stabbed him has not been arrested. We have not come here to attack anyone or demand anyone`s resignation. We are here to demand the arrest and trial of the main accused. If the remaining criminals are not arrested within 48 hours, we will escalate our protest by laying siege to Shahbagh Police Station."

Sami`s classmate, Toufik-ul Islam, said, "The main accused in Shammo`s murder has still not been arrested and we don’t see any effort to arrest the main accused.``

In the meantime, a delegation of protesters has gone to meet with Shahbagh Police officials, as confirmed by the protesters.

The delegation includes department teachers Dr. Md Abdus Salam, Dr. Asim Das and Dr. Md Sirajul Islam.
