The government has approved the import of 50,000 metric tons of non-Basmati par-boiled rice to strengthen national food reserves and stabilize market prices.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed at the Cabinet Division in Dhaka on Monday.
The procurement, proposed by the Ministry of Food under Package-06 through international open tender, aims to ensure adequate supply amid seasonal demand fluctuations.
Singapore-based M/S Agrocorp International Pte Ltd has been recommended as the successful bidder. The shipment is expected to arrive in phases, supporting the country’s strategic grain stock and helping curb price volatility.
Officials said the move will bolster food security and maintain steady availability of rice in domestic markets.
