(BSS) – There will be no crisis of sacrificial animals in Cumilla during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha as a total of 23,166 animals will be surplus in the district.

According to the Cumilla District Department of Livestock, the demand for sacrificial animals in 17 upazilas of the district is estimated to be 2,37,586. The district already has 2,60,752 animals.

Among the animals, cows are 1,91,082, 608 buffaloes, 56,940 goats, 11,805 sheep and 317 other animals.

Among the 17 upazilas of the district, there are 16,763 sacrificial animals in Adarsh Sadar Upazila, 13,399 in Chauddagram Upazila, 23,120 in Barura Upazila, 33,867 in Laksam Upazila, 27,174 in Nangalkot Upazila, 15,210 in Chandina Upazila, 9,250 in Daudkandi Upazila, 14,842 in Debidwar Upazila, 19,049 in Muradnagar Upazila, 9,664 in Burichang Upazila, 8,764 in Brahmanpara Upazila, 13,362 in Homna Upazila, 8,727 in Meghna Upazila, 6,871 in Titas Upazila, 9,649 in Sadar Dakshin Upazila, 11,911 in Monoharganj Upazila and 19,238 in Lalmai Upazila. Each upazila of the district has additional sacrificial animals than its requirement.

Talking to BSS, farmers of the district expressed satisfaction over the initiatives of administration to prevent the entry of Indian cows in the country .

They hoped that if Indian cows do not enter into the country, they will get a fair price in the market.

Md. Monir Hossain, owner of Nur Jahan Agro in Kaliajuri area of the town, said that he has reared 58 cows in his farm.

Out of cows, he said, he already sold 10 for sacrifice.

“The price has not increased much this year compared to the last year. Since the price of cow feed is affordable, I am not charging high price for cows,” he added.

District Livestock Officer Chandan Kumar Poddar said that since Cumilla is a border district, the district Livestock Department is coordinating with all organizations including the BGB, district administration and police administration to ensure that no animals can come illegally from India.

“We hope that due to our strict surveillance, animals from that side will not be able to come to our country,” he added.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan said they have started working in coordination with various organizations to ensure that animals from India cannot enter to the country illegally during the upcoming Eid .

“We have various plans to prevent extortion and harassment in various places, including trucks carrying sacrificial animals. Like last Eid festival people will celebrate Eid peacefully this year too,” he added.
