Md. Mijanur Rahman Akanda, Phulpur: A thematic tree plantation programme was held in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh on Wednesday as part of efforts to address the adverse impacts of climate change, protect the environment, and conserve biodiversity.

The programme was inaugurated at around 11:00am by Phulpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Yusuf along the road stretching from Nagua Bazar to Banshtala.

Speaking at the event, the UNO stressed that tree plantation is one of the most effective ways to maintain ecological balance and mitigate the harmful effects of climate change. He urged people from all walks of life to plant more trees to help ensure a healthier and more sustainable environment for future generations.

As part of the initiative, 200 palmyra (tal) saplings were planted in rows along both sides of the road, aiming to increase green cover while enhancing the area`s environmental resilience.

The programme was attended by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Shafiqul Islam, Upazila Agriculture Officer Nadia Ferdousi, Project Implementation Officer Begum Shahin, Upazila Fisheries Officer Ujjal Hossain, and local residents.

Officials said such community-based plantation programmes play an important role in raising public awareness about environmental protection and contribute to the government`s broader climate adaptation and afforestation efforts. They also encouraged local residents to take responsibility for nurturing the newly planted saplings to ensure their long-term survival and environmental benefits.
